Ed Panar’s ‘In The Vicinity’: A Photographic Journey in the Emerald Triangle

Ed Panar’s In The Vicinity captures the particular feel of the sunset chapter of the Wild West era of an off-the-grid industry. Photographed in a remote corner of Mendocino County between 2007 and 2017, in the hazy and enigmatic beauty of Northern California’s Emerald Triangle, the premier outdoor cannabis growing area in the United States in the pre-legal era of cannabis production.

Looking at its subject in an oblique way — the plant itself remaining elusive — the book conveys a sense of landing in the middle of a strange world. Hidden under the cover of densely forested mountain sides, foothills and valleys, we find ourselves in the midst of a secretive world where clandestine operations take place behind rambling fence lines, locked gates, and dusty dirt roads in an ever shifting grey area of legalization, self-sufficiency and raw capitalistic impulses.

The quiet clarity of Panar’s photographs provide an open-ended invitation to consider the blurred lines of photographic representation and its ability to provide “documentary” insight into something as secretive as this mythical plant and the emerging modern cannabis economy.

And, if the interior photos are sly and mysterious, always keeping us at a respectful distance, In The Vicinity becomes revelatory at the edges, and at the end, when a bonus miniature zine — safely tucked into a stash pocket — reveals the primary star of the book.
