Two Cities, One DNA
Orestes Gonzalez is not merely a witness to the urban landscape. His work is an insight into how he navigates the world. His current work isn’t just a collection of street photography; it is a study of parallel rhythms. With HAVANAYORK, Gonzalez—an architect by training whose work is held in the permanent collections of The Met and MoMA—returns to his roots. Born in Havana and seasoned in New York, he brings a unique “structural intimacy” to this solo exhibition.
His celebrated monograph, Julio’s House, established him as a premier voice in contemporary photography—a storyteller capable of turning intimate, private spaces into universal narratives of memory and identity.
For the first two weeks in March, gallery onetwentyeight is proud to present HAVANAYORK in a solo exhibition. This collection explores the raw, parallel energies of Havana and New York City—two iconic urban landscapes that, despite their geopolitical differences, share a profound atmospheric DNA.
While the weathered textures of Havana and the grit of New York provide the backdrop, the true “urban framework” in Gonzalez’s work is the people themselves. In HAVANAYORK, he captures a striking symmetry between the two populations: the same weary grace, the same defiant joy, and a matching spirit of survival. By focusing on these parallel lives, Gonzalez exposes a shared humanity that ignores borders, proving that the DNA of a city is written in the character of its inhabitants.
Visitors are invited to experience this dialogue between two iconic landscapes and witness a portrait of two cities that, despite the miles and the politics, breathe the same air.
